Why do car ignition coils always burn out?
Jan 10, 2023
First, a brief introduction to the ignition coil is composed of the main coil, secondary coil, magnetic core, switch transistor and other auxiliary components, the main coil is charged by the battery, the secondary coil discharge spark plug is ignited, and the triode is responsible for switching. The charging time is controlled by the battery voltage and engine speed to ensure that the energy of each charge is consistent, the ignition coil has three wires and four wires, the 3-wire is the power supply positive, negative, switch control (ECU command), and the 4-wire has an additional ignition detection line, which can detect whether the spark plug is ignited (whether there is a discharge current in the secondary coil).
To put it simply, the ignition coil is a transformer, that is, the voltage of tens of volts is raised to tens of thousands of volts, but the voltage input to the primary coil is provided by the electronic igniter.
Second, the causes of ignition coil burnout: 1. Aging breakdown of insulation layer or damage of switch transistor, 2. Large spark plug gap will lead to large load of the main coil, large heating, fast aging of the insulation layer, 3. Small spark plug gap leads to large secondary coil discharge current, large heating, fast aging of the insulation layer, 4. The assembled ignition coil may have poor durability of insulation materials, large coil internal resistance, large heating, low quality of the tertiary tube, and other life will be shorter.

If it is always burned out, it will burn out soon after replacement, what is the reason, here are some of them:
1. First look at the problem of the generator, if the power generation is too high, the load of the ignition coil is too heavy and it is easy to burn out, but if the power generation is really too high, then the body appliances, such as light bulbs, will often be damaged; Of course, the quality of accessories is not excluded, so it is best to measure the power generation first. 2. The spark plug gap is too large, adjust the gap or replace the spark plug; 3. The quality of gasoline is not good, try to change to high-grade gasoline; 4. The cylinder compression ratio is not right, adjust the compression ratio; 5. If the computer board has a program failure, you can go to the repair shop to use the computer to check the car and clear the error information. If it doesn't work, there may be a problem with your car's transmission. 6. The power supply voltage is unstable; 7. The resistance of the high-voltage line is abnormal, replace the high-voltage line; 8. There is a short circuit phenomenon in the secondary; 9. The primary current of the ignition controller is too high, causing the ignition coil to overheat; 10. Subjected to high temperature, high pressure wave has problems and does not work well; 11. There is a small chance that the coil itself is a problem, you can try it with a different brand; 12. The manifold of the flame generator does not work well;
The ignition coil itself is a transformer, which is like a transformer in household appliances, when the voltage changes within the specified range, it will not burn the transformer, usually the transformer is caused by the transformer load is too heavy, so when solving this problem, we must try to find out the cause of excessive load or component aging.
